What is the Principality of Sealand?
The Principality of Sealand is the world's smallest country. It stands in Sealand territorial waters in the central North Sea, with England as its neighbour to the west. Its territory is the fortress Roughs Tower, built by Britain in 1942 beyond the limit of Britain's territorial waters at the time. On 2 September 1967 Prince Roy Bates declared the Principality of Sealand. On 21 October 1968 an English court ruled that the fortress lay outside British jurisdiction. Sealand has exercised sovereignty continuously for 59 years and the fortress is inhabited 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Head of State is Sovereign Prince Michael of Sealand, son of Prince Roy Bates. Read the legal case for Sealand.
Is a Sealand Noble Title real?
Yes. Like other monarchies, the Principality of Sealand confers Noble Titles. Every holder is entered in the Sealand register of Noble Title holders and receives a Deed of Title issued in their name. Once conferred, a Sealand Noble Title is held for life. It does not expire and there is nothing to renew.
It is a title of the Principality of Sealand, not a British title. In the United Kingdom the sale of honours is a criminal offence and new dukedoms have been created only for members of the Royal Family for more than a century. Sealand is not governed by British law, and Sovereign Prince Michael has conferred Sealand Noble Titles on people worldwide since 2007.
Does a Sealand Noble Title have legal effect in other countries?
No. A Sealand Noble Title gives you no right, status or privilege under the law of the People's Republic of China, the United Kingdom or any other state. It is not a nationality. It is not a passport. It cannot be used for visas, residency or any official document. The Sealand Government has never claimed otherwise, and we ask you to be cautious of any third party that does.
Its meaning lies in your connection to the Principality of Sealand and its story, in the same way that honours conferred by many countries carry recognition rather than legal privilege.
Where does the money go?
Revenue from Noble Titles and E-Citizenship is the Principality of Sealand's main source of income. It maintains the fortress Roughs Tower, keeps it inhabited around the clock and funds the work of the Sealand Government. Every Noble Title and every E-Citizen helps to keep the world's smallest country standing.

Why do people buy a Sealand Noble Title?
Most holders receive one as a gift. It is one of the few gifts that cannot be bought anywhere else: a deed in the recipient's name, from the world's smallest country, carrying the story of one family that wanted freedom so much it founded a nation. Birthdays, weddings, graduations, anniversaries and Christmas are the most common occasions.
