Sealand Seahawks: Representing the Principality of Sealand on the American Football Field

Sealand Seahawks: Representing the Principality of Sealand on the American Football Field

The Origins of the Sealand Seahawks

The story of the Sealand Seahawks begins in 2005, long before the team ever represented the Principality of Sealand.

While working in Chester, I discovered a local American football team called the Romans. Like many in the UK, I’d followed the sport since its boom in the late 1980s—but I’d never truly understood it.

That changed the moment I attended my first game.

It wasn’t polished. It wasn’t always clear. But it was intense, physical, and the lads seemed to be having fun crashing into each other.

I’d found my people.

More Than a Game: Building a Community Through American Football

What kept me involved wasn’t just the sport, it was the community.

Over the next 15 years, American football became a gateway to friendships, travel, and unforgettable experiences. A defining moment came during a tour to Iceland with the Ouse Valley Exiles, where the idea of combining sport and international connection truly took hold.

Alongside Neale McMaster, I later helped form the Thundering Herd, organising tours across Europe, including Budapest and Palma.

But something bigger was coming.

A New Vision After Covid: Football, Travel, and Mental Health

By 2021, following the impact of Covid, it was clear that people needed more than just sport, they needed connection.

Before a game in Belfast, sitting in Franklins Bar, I wrote down a simple idea:

A travelling American football team focused not on elite performance—but on experience, inclusion, and mental wellbeing.

The goal wasn’t to build the best team on paper.

It was to build something meaningful.

Why Sealand? An Identity Like No Other

To make that vision work, the team needed independence—something outside traditional governing structures.

That’s when the Principality of Sealand became the perfect fit.

Sealand represents:

  • Independence
  • Resilience
  • A belief in doing things differently

After learning more about Sealand and already having a personal connection through buying a title the year before for my father, Lord Nicolas Ireland—I reached out with a simple question:

“Would you like an American football team?”

The answer:

“Sure?”

And just like that, the Sealand Seahawks were born.

The First Opponent: South Dublin Panthers

With a team assembled from across the UK, Europe, and the United States, the next challenge was finding an opponent.

Due to logistical and governance complications in the UK, we looked to Ireland. After explaining the concept, many times, Dr Emma Burrows of the South Dublin Panthers agreed to host us in February 2022.

The concept raised a few eyebrows:

“So, you represent a country you’ve never been to?”
“Correct.”

Even governing bodies had questions:

“Can you provide a home address?”
“Principality of Sealand, North Sea.”

The First Game in Sealand Seahawks History

Before making our international debut, we hosted a charity game in Chester in October 2021 to bring players together.

Then, on the 19th of February 2022, the Sealand Seahawks officially took to the field.

The result:

Sealand Seahawks 42 - 13 South Dublin Panthers

A statement performance for a brand new team of people that barely knew each other and the beginning of something much bigger.

Looking Ahead: Taking Sealand Worldwide

After that first victory, the focus quickly shifted.

Not “What did we just do?”

But:

“Where next?”

The answer led to Montpellier, continuing the mission to represent Sealand on an international stage, though we hadn't banked on the tiger mosquitos...
