In a significant stride for ocean conservation, South Asian nations are leading the charge in implementing the Global Ocean Treaty. As of early February 2025, countries including Bangladesh, The Maldives, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have committed to signing and ratifying the Agreement on Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). This treaty facilitates the creation of large-scale sanctuaries on the high seas, aiming to protect marine biodiversity and combat climate change. The collective efforts of these nations underscore a bold, forward-thinking leadership in safeguarding our oceans for future generations.
