As of early February 2025, countries including Bangladesh, The Maldives, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have committed to signing and ratifying the Agreement on Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). This treaty facilitates the creation of large-scale sanctuaries on the high seas, aiming to protect marine biodiversity and combat climate change.
