On 17 March 2026, a seven-person cleanup crew on the coast of East Java, Indonesia, cleared 900 pounds of plastic and trash from a single beach. Fifty-one pounds of it were paid for by Sealanders. If you are an E-Citizen, part of that haul has your name on it. Every active E-Citizen funds ocean cleanup every single month, and together Sealanders have funded the removal of 7,801 pounds (3.5 tonnes) of plastic and debris through the Principality of Sealand's partnership with 4ocean, the ocean cleanup company from Boca Raton, Florida. Here is what Sealanders have pulled out of the sea so far, how to add your own pounds to the total, and why the world's smallest country made cleaning the ocean a matter of national policy.
We have more skin in this game than most. Sealand is a country built on the sea: a fortress standing in Sealand territorial waters in the central North Sea, inhabited around the clock since 2 September 1967. There is no land to retreat to. The water around us is the whole country. When the sea is in trouble, Sealand is in trouble, which is why cleaning it is national policy and not a side project.
What E-Citizens have achieved so far
Sealanders have funded the removal of 7,801 pounds (3.5 tonnes) of plastic and debris from the ocean through 4ocean as of October 2026. That total was reached by Sealanders around the world, led by E-Citizens in 137 countries who each pay less than the price of a coffee a month to be part of the world's smallest country.
To put 7,801 pounds in perspective:
- That is the equivalent of around 156,000 single-use plastic bottles, or 3.9 million plastic straws.
- It weighs more than two family cars.
- It was removed by paid, professional crews, not volunteers, so it also funds jobs in coastal communities.
Every E-Citizen has a personal share of this total. Log in to your E-Citizen Area and open your impact tracker to see the pounds removed on your behalf since the day you joined. The figure updates as each cleanup is confirmed. Every cleanup is logged with its date, location, GPS coordinates and photo evidence, so every pound we claim is a pound that was physically pulled from the water.
This is the part we want every E-Citizen to understand. Your subscription is not a fee for a digital card. It is a standing instruction to pull plastic out of the sea, every month, in your name. When you stay, the ocean gets cleaner. When you leave, that stops.

Why the ocean is Sealand's mission
Sealand depends on the sea more completely than any other nation on Earth. Our territory is the fortress HM Fort Roughs, a former Second World War sea fort standing on two concrete legs, and the Sealand territorial waters that surround it in the central North Sea, with England as our neighbour to the west. We have no fields, no rivers and no mountains. Our territory is the sea itself, and we have held it for 59 years.
Every person who has lived on the fortress since 1967 has watched the water change. Plastic that was rare in the 1960s is now a common sight in the sea around Sealand, drifting past the fortress on the tide. The North Sea connects to the same ocean system that 4ocean's crews clean in Florida, Guatemala and Indonesia. Pollution does not respect borders, and neither does cleanup.
Our national motto is E Mare Libertas, From the Sea, Freedom. The sea gave Sealand its independence. Protecting it is how we repay the debt. That is why the Sealand Government made ocean cleanup a core benefit of E-Citizenship rather than an optional add-on.

About 4ocean and how the partnership works
4ocean is an ocean cleanup company founded in 2017 in Boca Raton, Florida, by Alex Schulze and Andrew Cooper. It is a Public Benefit Corporation and a Certified B Corp. 4ocean employs full-time, professional captains and crews who recover plastic and other debris from oceans, rivers and coastlines, and every pound is logged, weighed and verified. On 20 February 2026, 4ocean announced it had removed more than 50 million pounds of plastic and trash from the world's ocean, rivers and coastlines since 2017.
The Sealand x 4ocean partnership works in two ways:
- Every active E-Citizen funds cleanup every month. Every month, Sealand funds plastic and trash removal on behalf of every active E-Citizen. The more E-Citizens we have, the more plastic leaves the ocean.
- Every digital Noble Title removes one pound of plastic. For each digital Lord, Lady, Baron, Baroness, Count, Countess, Duke or Duchess title sold on sealandgov.org, one pound of plastic is removed from the ocean on Sealand's behalf.
Every cleanup Sealand funds is logged with its date, location, GPS coordinates, the number of crew on site and photo evidence, and we publish the running total to every E-Citizen in their impact tracker and monthly impact report. Nothing is estimated.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Sealand x 4ocean partnership?
The Principality of Sealand funds ocean plastic removal through 4ocean, a certified ocean cleanup company based in Boca Raton, Florida. Every active E-Citizenship funds 4ocean's cleanup crews each month, every digital Noble Title sold on sealandgov.org removes one pound of plastic, and every cleanup is logged with GPS coordinates and photo evidence.
How much plastic has Sealand removed from the ocean?
As of October 2026, Sealanders have funded the removal of 7,801 pounds (3.5 tonnes) of plastic and debris through 4ocean, the equivalent of around 156,000 single-use plastic bottles. The figure is updated as each cleanup is verified with photographs and GPS coordinates.
Does my E-Citizenship really fund ocean cleanup?
Yes. Every active E-Citizenship contributes to Sealand's monthly 4ocean donation. Your personal share is shown in the impact tracker in your E-Citizen Area and in your monthly impact report email.
Where does 4ocean clean?
4ocean operates full-time cleanup crews on oceans, rivers and coastlines, including Florida, Guatemala and Indonesia. The cleanups funded by Sealand E-Citizens to date have taken place on the coast of Indonesia, each logged with GPS coordinates and photographs. 4ocean has removed more than 50 million pounds of plastic and trash since 2017, a milestone it announced on 20 February 2026.
Is the Sealand x 4ocean bracelet made from ocean plastic?
Yes. The bracelet is made from recycled ocean plastic recovered by 4ocean, in Sealand's national colours, with the Sealand fortress silhouette and the 4ocean mark. The First Edition of 210 pieces is reserved for E-Citizens.
Why does a country in the North Sea care about ocean plastic?
Sealand's territory is a sea fortress and the Sealand territorial waters around it in the central North Sea, inhabited since 2 September 1967. The sea is our land. The North Sea is part of the same connected ocean system that 4ocean cleans, so plastic removed anywhere protects the waters around Sealand.
Is Sealand a micronation?
Sealand is often listed in articles about micronations because of its size, population and unusual history. We describe ourselves as what we are: the Principality of Sealand, a sovereign Principality held continuously since 1967 under our own flag, constitution, currency and passports. Funding ocean cleanup through 4ocean is one of the ways the Sealand Government acts as a nation on behalf of its E-Citizens.
Two ways to stand with Sealand
There are two ways to become part of the Principality of Sealand, and both help clean the ocean. E-Citizenship is an ongoing membership of the nation and its community, and it funds cleanup every month. A Noble Title is a one-time honour and a gift that lasts a lifetime, and each digital title removes a pound of plastic from the ocean.
Noble Title and E-Citizenship income is Sealand's main source of revenue. It pays for the upkeep of the fortress, the crew who inhabit it 24 hours a day, and the Sealand Government. When you join, you keep a country alive and the sea around it cleaner.
