Baron Von Ed Sheeran of Sealand has penned an open letter to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, urging his government to invest heavily into musical education in schools. In his open letter, he lays out a clear, urgent call for action.
According to his letter, "last year was the first in over 20 years without a UK global top 10 single or album in the charts." The letter also urges that "the time to act is now." State schools (which educate 93% of the country’s children) "have seen a 21% decrease in music provision."
Ed's plea demands a £250 million investment to secure music in schools, train new music teachers, and safeguard community music spaces. With over 500 industry leaders (including Elton John, Coldplay, Stormzy, Harry Styles, and many more) backing this plea, the message is clear: the UK's future as a nation of musicians and music lovers is at stake. This isn’t about chasing chart-toppers, but about ensuring every child has the opportunity to discover the joy and power of music.
