Interview with Sir Joshua Goodwin - Sealand’s Pro Wrestling Champion

Name/ ring name?
Let’s go with my ring name — 'Sir Joshua Goodwin'. I’ve also been a hitman and a king, but I’m quite fond of being a noble… and a champion.

How did you get into pro wrestling?
A friend called me one day and said we were going to wrestling training. Like him, I was a big fan, so I shrugged and said, “Sure.” He quit after two weeks but I didn’t.

Where did you train?
I started at Evolution Wrestling in Gloucester. I was primarily trained by Iyestyn Rees and Gilligan Gordon - two legends on the domestic scene. A lot of credit also goes to my old tag partner and mentor, David Eton. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What are your signature or finishing moves?
Glad you asked. There’s the Sealand Suplex (German suplex), the Sealand Uppercut (European uppercut), the North Sea Lariat, Roughs Tower (whiplash neckbreaker), and my personal favourite — Red, White and Black (cobra clutch). Not only are those the colours of my beloved Sealand, but they’re also what you see before you go to sleep...

Who were your heroes growing up?
Aside from the Sealand royal family... (Obviously) I grew up watching Mick Foley, The Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels. I had a soft spot for Eugene too. As I became more of a student of wrestling, I really began to appreciate the likes of Arn Anderson and William Regal.

What’s been your best match?
Some of my favourites include facing Alan Lee Travis for the LDN British title, teaming with David Eton against the Brothers Awe, and getting to wrestle Joel Redman and James Mason, two absolute legends of British wrestling.

Any disastrous moments?
I once got hip-tossed about fourteen times in a match by THE Scotty 2 Hotty. In fairness, I did try to attack him while he was taking his hat off… that didn’t end well for me.

Any major injuries?
Nothing major, but everything hurts. I’m pretty sure I cracked my hip once, but I was young so I ignored it. It’s fine now… although I do have a lump I’m fairly sure shouldn’t be there.

Which promotion are you with currently?
Right now I’m working with Exposure Wrestling in Newport. I’m taking a few baby steps back into wrestling after some time off due to illness, but I plan to be back all over the place very soon.

What titles have you won?
I’m a multiple-time tag team champion with David Eton as part of the Heritage City Hitmen. I’ve competed for several singles titles, with less success, but I am proud to be the Principality of Sealand National Wrestling Champion. I’ll defend that title against all comers, provided you’re a Sealander... Of course...

How did you discover the Principality of Sealand?
I’m honestly not sure where I first heard about Sealand, but I fell in love with its story, its history, its message of freedom and self-determination. The idea that you can be anything you want if you’re willing to work for it. Who doesn’t want to compete for their nation? To stand on the biggest stage and hear their national anthem? I get misty-eyed just thinking about it.

I’m proud to say I’m Sealand’s number one professional wrestler. It means everything to represent a nation and spread its message around the world. I hope to be a true ambassador for Sealand and an example to others.

What would you say to anyone wanting to get into pro wrestling?
Don’t quit after two weeks!!

What would you say to anyone wanting to get involved with Sealand?
Go for it. Roll your sleeves up and get involved. Get your title, become an e-citizen, spread the message. There's a famous phrase from President John F Kennedy... Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
