Sealand Minister of Sport and Culture: Building Teams, Events and Community in Sealand

From Everyday Jobs to Sealand

By Mike Ireland - Minister for Sport and Culture.

I’ll be honest, I had absolutely no idea what a Minister does.

I’m still not entirely sure.

My career path hasn’t exactly been traditional. I’ve worked as a glass collector, a barman, spent time in asset finance sales, and then built a 19-year career in policing.

But like many things connected to the Principality of Sealand, this role wasn’t about following a conventional path—it was about building something different.

A Change of Direction

After seeing how policing had changed since I joined in 2007, I decided to try something new and qualified as an HGV driver.

That meant long days, sometimes up to 15 hours, with no real idea where I’d end up sleeping. It wasn’t exactly glamorous, and it gave me a lot of time to think.

Most of that thinking revolved around Sealand and pushing the Seahawks as far as we could go. We'd done around 14 tours, including a headline game in Las Vegas against the MLFR Nationals.

The Idea: Growing Sport in Sealand

Through regular conversations with Prince Liam, the idea began to take shape.

What if we could build more sports teams?
More events?
More opportunities for people to get involved?

I’ve always been good at organising things, putting on events, bringing people together, so this felt like a natural step. Just a slightly more formal version of what I had been doing.

Expanding Sealand Sports

Since stepping into the role of Minister of Sport, I've been busy.

The Sealand Seahawks have applied to join the International Federation of American Football and organised a massive three team tour to Northern Italy.

But it doesn’t stop there.

We’ve introduced and developed multiple Sealand sports teams, including:

  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Softball
  • Dodgeball
  • Athletics

We’re also supporting the existing Walking Football team led by John Cooney, helping it reach a wider audience.

Upcoming Events and Charity Work

Community and charity are at the heart of what we’re building.

This year, we’re proud to support Mind through several upcoming events:

  • Princes XI Cricket Match – July, Frinton-on-Sea, where we'll be able to see Sealand from the pitch!
  • Seagulls Softball Tournament – September, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire,
  • Prince Michael & Princess Mei Cups, our usual American football matches in February 2027

These events aren’t just about sport, they’re about connection, awareness, and bringing people together.

New Initiatives: Life Beyond Sport

We’re also launching new projects that go beyond the field.

Life After the Locker Room

A platform focused on athletes transitioning out of sport and navigating what comes next, something rarely talked about, but incredibly important. You can check the Youtube channel out here to see the interviews we've already done or here for our TikTok.

Have A Go Heroes

Monthly events encouraging people, especially those who might feel hesitant, to try new sports in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

We’ll make fools of ourselves in learning how sports work so you don’t have to.

Always Building Something New

Sitting still isn’t really an option for me due to me being my own version of 'Neuro Spicy', so alongside sport and mental health initiatives, we’re exploring some slightly more unconventional ideas:

  • A 24-hour pirate radio show on Discord for Sealanders (coming this summer)
  • A potential Pedalo trip to Sealand as our phrase within the Seahawks is, "We don't care how you get on tour, take a pedalo if you need to!

Yes, really.

Follow Sealand Sports

All of this, and plenty more, will be shared across our social channels under Sealand Sports, where you can follow the journey, the events, and all the chaos in between.
