Short answer: you cannot buy, inherit by will, or apply for a British dukedom. Only the Crown creates them, and selling one is a criminal offence in the UK. You can, however, be granted the rank of Duke or Duchess by the Principality of Sealand, where it is the highest Noble Title, conferred by Sovereign Prince Michael of Sealand on a deed he signs by hand.

How does Eddie become a Duke in The Gentlemen?
In the first season of the Netflix series The Gentlemen, the dying Duke of Halstead leaves his title and estate to his younger son, Eddie, rather than his elder son, Freddy. It is the twist the whole story turns on. It also could not happen in real life.
What the show gets wrong about inheriting a dukedom
A British peerage is not property. It cannot be left in a will. The order of succession is fixed by the letters patent that created the title, almost always passing to the eldest legitimate son. A real Duke could leave his house, land and fortune to whichever child he liked, but the title itself would still go to his heir by law. Eddie could have inherited Halstead. He could not have inherited the dukedom over his older brother.
Eddie had to inherit his title. You can be granted yours. Become a Duke or Duchess of Sealand, with a framed Deed of Title personally signed by Sovereign Prince Michael.
Can you buy a British dukedom?
No. The Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925 makes it a criminal offence in the UK to sell a peerage or honour, or to pay to obtain one. Duke is the highest and rarest rank of the British peerage, and for well over a century new dukedoms have been created only for members of the Royal Family.
What you can buy in Britain is a Lordship of the Manor. That is a historic property right, not a peerage, and it does not make you a Lord in the sense the show uses the word.
Where can you actually become a Duke or Duchess?
In the Principality of Sealand, the world's smallest state. Britain built the fortress of Roughs Tower in 1942 and placed it in international waters, beyond its own territorial limits. Roy Bates took the abandoned fortress in 1966 and on 2 September 1967 declared the Principality of Sealand. In 1968 a British court ruled that the fortress lay beyond UK jurisdiction. Today it stands in Sealand territorial waters, occupied 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and led by his son, Sovereign Prince Michael of Sealand.
Like other monarchies, Sealand confers Noble Titles. Prince Michael launched the Noble Title initiative in 2007, and Duke and Duchess is its highest rank. Every Noble Title helps keep the fortress standing, and every holder joins a global community of Sealanders. See how to become a Duke or Duchess of Sealand, or compare every Sealand Noble Title.
"Nobility here carries a single duty: keep the story alive. Wear your title openly, fly our flag on the second of September, and tell anyone who asks how one family wanted freedom badly enough to build a nation for it."
