How do I become a Sealand citizen?

Short answer: You become a Sealander by applying for Sealand E-Citizenship on the Sealand Government Website. E-Citizenship of the Principality of Sealand has been open to applicants worldwide since summer 2024. It costs £7.99 a month or £95.88 a year, identity verification takes around 60 seconds, and your E-Citizen number is issued the moment you are sworn in.

Two kinds of Sealand citizenship

The Principality of Sealand recognises two forms of belonging.

  • Traditional citizenship is granted by the Sealand Government to people who have performed a great service to the nation, usually by helping to build, defend or maintain the fortress. Sealand has over 300 traditional citizens. It is an honour that is earned, not applied for, and Sealand passports have historically been issued to those who contributed to the formation and continuation of the Principality.
  • E-Citizenship is the open route. Anyone, anywhere, can apply online and become a Sealand E-Citizen, joining a global community of Sealanders in 137 countries.

How to become a Sealand E-Citizen in four steps

  1. Apply. Complete the short application on the Sealand E-Citizenship page. Choose monthly (£7.99) or annual (£95.88) and, if you want it, add the physical Sealand ID card (£49.99).
  2. Verify your identity. You receive an email link to a bank-grade identity provider, ISO 27001 certified and NIST-ranked. Photograph your ID and take a selfie. It takes around 60 seconds.
  3. Be sworn in. Your unique E-Citizen number is issued immediately and is yours forever.
  4. Activate your privileges. Add your Sealand ID to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, set up your @sealand.io email and VPN, and join the E-Citizen-only channel on the official Sealand Discord.

What Sealand E-Citizens receive

  • A digital Sealand ID and a unique E-Citizen number.
  • A privacy-first VPN, available everywhere except mainland China.
  • A personal @sealand.io email address.
  • Access to the E-Citizen-only channel on the official Sealand Discord.
  • 15% off the Sealand store from day one, plus E-Citizen-exclusive items.
  • A complimentary Noble Title deed for every twelve continuous months of E-Citizenship.
  • Verified ocean plastic removal, funded through Sealand's partnership with 4ocean.
  • Monthly missions in the Sealand Builders Programme.

Can E-Citizens visit the Sealand fortress?

Visits to the fortress are rare. Each year, one E-Citizen is invited to visit Sealand: the E-Citizen who has contributed the most to the Sealand Builders Programme over the year. Builders take part in monthly missions, from flying the Sealand flag in unusual places to cleaning the seas and representing Sealand on the field.

What E-Citizenship does and does not change

Sealand E-Citizenship is granted by the Principality of Sealand and is additive. Your existing nationality, passport, voting rights and tax status are unaffected. It does not confer a right of abode, residency or a visa in any other territory, and it does not currently include a Sealand passport.

Sealand has issued passports before and will again. When it does, only E-Citizens will be offered one.

What comes next for E-Citizens

  • The Sealand passport, offered only to E-Citizens when it returns.
  • Digital governance, giving E-Citizens a vote on the direction of the nation.
  • Sealand embassies, founded by select E-Citizens around the world.
  • The Sea Towers, a concept by Olthuis Water Studio for rebuilding the fortress for Sealand's next sixty years.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sealand a real country?

Yes. The Principality of Sealand was founded on 2 September 1967 by Prince Roy Bates on a Second World War fortress in the North Sea. It has its own constitution, flag, government, currency and passports. In 1968 a British court ruled that it had no jurisdiction over the fortress, and Sealand's claim to statehood rests on the Montevideo Convention criteria. Read the legal case for Sealand.

Where is Sealand?

Sealand is a fortress in Sealand territorial waters in the central North Sea, at 51°53′N 1°28′E, with England to the west. It has been inhabited every day since 1967.

Can I live on Sealand?

No. E-Citizenship does not include residency, and the fortress is inhabited by a small permanent crew. Can you live on Sealand?

How much does Sealand E-Citizenship cost?

£7.99 a month or £95.88 a year, billed in GBP. You can cancel or pause anytime from your account, and if you do not feel like a Sealander within 30 days of applying, you can request a full refund. Your E-Citizen number stays yours either way.

Can anyone in the world apply?

Yes. Sealand E-Citizenship is available worldwide. The VPN is the only benefit not available in mainland China.

Does E-Citizenship include a Sealand passport?

Not yet. When the Sealand passport returns, only E-Citizens will be offered one. Read about the Sealand passport.

Is my personal data secure?

Two ways to become a Sealander

A Sealand Noble Title is a one-time honour, issued as an official deed and a popular gift, from Lord or Lady to Duke or Duchess. E-Citizenship is ongoing membership of the nation and its global community. Revenue from Noble Titles and E-Citizenship is Sealand's main source of income. It funds the upkeep of the fortress, the crew who keep it inhabited 24/7, and the Sealand Government.

I would love to be a citizen a member or a part of this country. It is unique bizarre and unconventional but it is in a lovely and a good way. And I want to share my thoughts and ideas with this country. This country really got my interest.
